The cost of living has been rising, and people are feeling it at the pumps. For Dashers, that doesn’t only make living more expensive — it also cuts into their profit margins.

In 2022, when gas prices were at a peak and there were some calls from the community for DoorDash to pay Dashers more as a result of rising gas prices, DoorDash launched its Gas Rewards program to help mitigate the negative impact on Dashers. As a Dasher, you’ve always been able to deduct gas costs as a business expense on your tax return (one of the many benefits of self-employment), but the Gas Rewards program aimed to help Dashers even more.

Originally, the program offered 10% cashback on all gas purchases made with the DasherDirect card as well as a weekly bonus for the Dashers that drove the most. However, those initial benefits have been discontinued — the Gas Rewards program now offers 2% back as an incentive on gas purchases made with the DasherDirect card.

How to take advantage of the DoorDash Gas Rewards program

Getting your 2% cash back on gas is simple — all you’ll need is a DasherDirect (subject to program approval) card and the DasherDirect app for iOS or Android.

To do so, simply pay for your gas using your DasherDirect card. Your 2% cash back will be automatically added to your account. Then, use the DasherDirect mobile app to redeem your rewards — you’ll receive your cashback immediately in your debit account, and  you canspend it right away with your DasherDirect card.

But be prepared to encounter some snags along the way. Scott Jones, who has been dashing since 2018, says that it took him 10 months for him to receive his card after signing up for DasherDirect. During that time, customer service promised him several times that the card would be arriving shortly, and even tried to charge him $7 for a replacement card (Scott was able to get this fee waived).

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated occurrence — Dashers on Reddit have echoed Scott’s experience. That said, everyone’s experience is different, and there are many Dashers who are happy with their DasherDirect card and the benefits it provides.

To maximize your gas savings, you may also want to look into other credit cards and gas rewards programs, like Upside and GasBuddy. These programs aren’t associated with DoorDash, but they can be used either in addition to or instead of the DasherDirect card for gas savings. But unlike DasherDirect, these can only be used for gas and don’t provide any of the other DasherDirect benefits, like instant payout.
